Professor Baqui, a renowned public health expert and faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, has dedicated decades to transforming maternal and newborn healthcare, particularly in low-resource settings. His pioneering work has demonstrated that simple, community-based interventions—delivered by trained local health workers—can significantly reduce newborn mortality and improve health outcomes.
Through his leadership, the Projahnmo Research Foundation was established in Sylhet in 2001. This initiative brought essential newborn care directly to communities, resulting in a reduction of newborn deaths by more than one-third. The success of this model has influenced global health policies and inspired similar programs across multiple countries.
Professor Baqui’s research has also contributed to life-saving practices such as improved home-based newborn care and infection prevention methods, benefiting millions of families worldwide. His commitment to strengthening local leadership and building sustainable health systems continues to create lasting global impact.
