Dr. Abdullah H. Baqui
Dr. Abdullah Baqui is a professor of International Health and Director of the International Center for Maternal and Newborn Health at Johns Hopkins University in USA. He is trained in medicine, public health, heath systems, and infectious diseases epidemiology. He has extensive experience in public health research, training, education, and policy advocacy. Dr. Baqui has spent most of his career working to reduce child mortality, particularly in the areas of diarrheal diseases, micronutrients, and vaccines in his native Bangladesh and other countries in South Asia and Sub Saharan Africa. He joined the Bloomberg School of Public Health of Johns Hopkins University in 2000. Before joining the school, he served icddr,b in various capacities for 22 years. Working with Bangladesh Ministry of Health, icddr,b and other NGOs, he has established the Projahnmo Research Group in Bangladesh. He has conducted pioneering research related to newborn, child and maternal health that influenced national and global policies and programs. His groundbreaking work on newborn mortality and stillbirths, published in the Lancet paper of the Year (2008) outlined strategies that are simple but effective in reducing preventable newborn deaths and, importantly, are capable of being replicated widely throughout the world. Since this paper was published, the newborn mortality rate has significantly decreased. His current research interests include design and evaluation of health interventions to improve health and survival of mothers, newborns, and children and implementation research to improve coverage, quality and equity of preventive and curative health interventions in large programs in low- and middle-income countries. He has authored 270 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journal and many other reports, working papers and policy briefs. The other interests of Dr. Baqui include use of evidence in policy and programs, including the development of research capacity and the strengthening of public health training and education. He has mentored numerous public health professionals. Working closely with the WHO and many other national and international organizations, he assists with the development of policies intended to improve public health. He serves as the editor-in-chief of Journal of Health Population and Nutrition and as an honorary editorial consultant of the Lancet. Dr. Abdullah Baqui had received the American Public Health Association (APHA) Carl E. Taylor Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
