Abdullah Mahmud
Abdullah Mahmud does have an expertise on the operation of Pharmaceuticals Industries, currently working in AURI Nutra Science Inc. located in New York, USA. He did the Master of Medical Science in International Health, Uppsala University, Sweden in 2008. Mahmud does have hands on training on the Code of Federal Regularities (CFR) of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He has extensive experience in public health research, training, education, and policy advocacy that includes maternal & child health, nutrition, infectious diseases and epidemiology. Before joining the NUTRA Science Inc, he served icddr,b (https://www.icddrb.org) in various capacities for 29 years and led a number of clinical trials. He left icddr,b in 2023 as the Head of Research Management there for the period of 2019-2023. He has conducted pioneering research related to newborn, child and maternal health nutrition that influenced national and global policies and programs. His current research interests include design and evaluation of health interventions to improve health and survival of mothers, newborns, and children and implementation research to improve coverage, quality and equity of preventive and curative health interventions in large programs in low- and middle-income countries. Mahmud was also the elected President of icddr,b Staff Welfare Association for consecutive four years in the term of 2018-2019 and 2020-2021.
Mahmud successfully led teams in the implementation of several large-scale clinical research studies and Randomized Controlled Clinical Trials (RCTs) in Dhaka city and rural areas of Bangladesh in collaboration with national and international partners with financial support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), USAID, SDC, GAFTM, etc. The implementation of one of his recent clinical studies in Dhaka in collaboration with SickKids, Canada generated a new understanding of vitamin D metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and clinical effects in pregnancy which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine 2018 (N Engl J Med. 2018 Aug 9;379(6):535-546.
Mahmud has authored 89 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals and many other reports, working papers and policy briefs. The other interests of Mahmud include use of evidence in policy and programs, including the development of research capacity and the strengthening of public health training and education. He has mentored numerous public health professionals includes PhD and Masters students of several Universities United States and Canada.
